The End of Chivalry

California officially hammered the final nail in the coffin of chivalry yesterday. A man buying a cheap cigar grew belligerent when informed he was .41 cents short. He attempted to grab the cigar and when he failed leaned over to punched the young lady manning the register. Notice the response of the other customers.

crazy man punching Yadira

Detectives said the man took off and none of the other customers jumped into action right away.

Curse the day I stand idly by in similar circumstances.

Knights Templar Murder an Admiral

Knights TemplarThere are ways of getting readers to read articles. One is to have a snappy title, like this: Mexico madness: Did the Knights Templar murder the navy’s vice admiral? Really? Did the writer of this piece just try to put the murder of a Mexican vice admiral on the Knights Templar? Yes, but not in the way you think:

MEXICO CITY, Mexico — This week’s ambush murder of a Mexican navy admiral by alleged gang members in the violent Pacific coast state of Michoacan wasn’t a premeditated attack, the state’s acting governor said Wednesday.

Vice Adm. Carlos Salazar and a bodyguard were shot dead Sunday when gunmen attacked their official navy car, which had been diverted by a protest blockade on a major toll road on to a secondary road in Michoacan.

Federal police quickly arrested three men they say carried out the attack, whom they identify as low-level members of the Knights Templar criminal band.

“To me it’s clear that the attack wasn’t against the navy, that it wasn’t an attack on the vice admiral,” Gov. Jesus Reyna told a radio interviewer Wednesday morning. “It’s a lamentable, deplorable but really circumstantial event.”

An intelligence expert, Salazar was commander of the naval region headquartered in Puerto Vallarta that encompasses a long stretch of the Pacific coast, including the ports of Lazaro Cardenas and Manzanillo.

Knights Templar

Analysts say the Knights Templar control Lazaro Cardenas, through which precursor chemicals for methamphetamine are smuggled in from Asia. Michoacan is a major source of Templar-produced meth smuggled into the United States.

President Enrique Peña Nieto ordered more than 6,000 troops and federal police into Michoacan two months ago after a handful of towns formed militias to fight the Knights Templar.

Glad it was another Knights Templar.

Stupid Kids at #freejahar

If I had to pinpoint how I approach society, it is with an eye of toleration and a narrow view of acceptance. I stay fairly quiet about certain practices and don’t offer my opinion. I may not accept them from myself or my circle, but I tolerate them in others. As long as they don’t want me to publicly accept them. Don’t shove it in my face, be respectful, and life goes on.

That all said, what Mary Churback and Lacey Buckley are doing with the whole #freejahar movement is utterly naive. I believe in presumed innocence (ei incumbit probatio qui dicit, non qui negat-the burden of proof lies with who declares, not who denies) before a trial, but their actions are kicking salt in the victims’ wounds:

A group of about a dozen supporters cheered as the motorcade carrying Tsarnaev arrived at the courthouse. The demonstrators yelled “Justice for Jahar,” as Tsarnaev is known. One woman held a sign that said, “Free Jahar.”

Others held signs claiming Tsarnaev’s innocence, while suggesting elaborate conspiracies surrounding the bombing and Tsarnaev’s arrest.

“I’m here to show Dzhokhar support, to let him know there are thousands of people worldwide that do believe his innocence,” Mary Churback of Freetown told WBZ-TV news.

Lacey Buckley, 23, said she traveled from her home in Wenatchee, Wash., to attend the arraignment. Buckley said she has never met Tsarnaev but came because she believes he’s innocent. “I just think so many of his rights were violated. They almost murdered an unarmed kid in a boat,” she said.

And a student ********* ******* at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, where Tsarnaev attended, came to the courthouse because she wanted to see the suspect. She said he used to walk her friend home in the evenings because he was worried about her being alone.

“He would walk her from the campus library to her dorm at night,” she said.

As far as the Free Jahar movement and the stupid too pretty to be guilty, did they not read what he wrote inside the boat?

Update I: I received the below comment from a distraught father concerning his daughter:

This. Is Steve gillis regarding my daughter brittney gillis , I’m in contact with attorney Anthony diffrusia regarding what your doing to my daughter , my daughter is studying law at umass Dartmouth , we were at the trials yest, first we were there to see the whitey bulger case, we didn’t even realize the Boston bomber was there, my daughter simply said he attended the same school as her, I did not know him,I heard he used to walk girls back at night from the library to make sure they got back safe, brittney went on to say she feels he’s guilty and should go to jail. What you hava done is try to make a story even at ruining someone’s life my daughter is a good girl she called me in tears crying, saying you have her as a supporter, so more than money I’d seek I’d rather just have you fix this false lie, brittney is a good person a catechism teacher speaks schools against bullying, you really messed up this kid is so so distraught

Steven, I corrected the article. You realize, of course, I am just reporting the news from multiple sites. You might want to go direct to them. I did not just pick your daughter’s name out of mid-air. Truly, I don’t doubt that your daughter is a good person. Take a breath and accept my apologies.

Update II: Ex Bootneck, as is his elegant way with words, has an excellent suggestion for Steve:

Steve Gillis, I can only presume your daughter offered the information to a reporter and then gave her name; or, was over heard by a reporter, who may then have asked a third party if they knew your daughters name, for them to subsequently release the same detail into print. Without Brittny’s permission it is obviously reporters ‘here say’ which is what 99.999% of such scribes will use to enhance their press release.

Under such circumstances of ‘he said, she said’ etc, it is always best advice that third parties do not quote any personal detail to any reporter, as they will influence the story to match their prospectus (some thing that is taught at some point to every Law student, no matter where they may study). Incidentally, I am on this side of the pond in the UK, where the same point is made constantly.
(The reporter will have kept her notebook and submitted details for reference, that you can check on if required; through a court of law)!

If I was in your position I would also be angry, but my focus would be with the reporter who obviously has used a misquote to their advantage. This should be nipped in the bud now with those from the Press as well as the Main Stream Media. Such false information could possibly have a detrimental effect on a future case that your daughter becomes involved in when she qualifies as a lawyer. As we are all too well aware, once a piece enters into the WWW, any story there after is on view for eternity.

If I may offer some free advice that comes from the heart, and not from your attorneys desk (that will cost you a fortune to hear the same)?
Go to the reporters desk in question, and ask for her line manager/editor, and ask them to rescind your daughters name and story, which will then be counter balanced for prosperity as a misquote, it has to be held on their file and their system. A hard copy, day, dated, letter can also be requested.

NavyOne, the owner of this Blog has simply quoted from CBS Boston, as well as the reporter Heather Ginsberg’s press release, of which he has genuinely retracted, and apologised for (as an act from a genuine person of high standing, who holds the values of integrity & responsibility sincerely).
Your posted comment as well as NavyOne’s reply is also testament to your feelings about your daughters misquote, which again will be held within the WWW for eternity, for all and sundry to view.

Your Lawyer will tell you that it is not against the law for a third party to quote a general release from the Main Stream Media (the Presidential Office does it every day). Even a third party newspaper can pick up the same story and run with it without fear of prosecution. I have no doubt that European tabloids will be picking up the same story and repeating it as I type this tome.

Sincerely,

Yours Aye.

Thanks mate.

Update III: Wow, the media dropped the ball. Steve was correct in that they chopped his daughter’s words to fit their needs. The unedited section, by the WHDH team:

“I would still support him because I don’t feel that he is guilty. I just don’t see anything, any evidence that points that they’re guilty. I don’t see video that they dropped the backpacks. I don’t see anything that points out that he’s guilty. I see more that he’s innocent, if anything,” said Karina Figueroa.

“I think he’s guilty for falling into his brother’s influence, but I don’t think it was in his nature to do something like that,” said Brittany Gillis, who went to school at UMass Dartmouth with Tsarnaev. She did not know him personally, but knew people who did know him.

Note that I represented Brittany Gillis by these ********* ******* in the original story. It really sounded as if she was sympathetic to the suspects when she was the opposite.

Bikes Stolen from Ride 2 Recovery

There is a special warm place reserved for certain criminals. I have a severe dislike for all those who commit felonies, but whoever pulled this deserves a cell:

A custom-made mountain bike belonging to a double-amputee war veteran has been recovered after being reported stolen in Anchorage, but four other bikes remained missing, police said Wednesday.

The bike belonging to Army Staff Sgt. Matt DeWitt was one of five bikes — together valued in the tens of thousands of dollars — reported stolen Tuesday by the nonprofit Ride 2 Recovery, the Anchorage Daily News reported. The group had organized the trip to Alaska for wounded war veterans training for a race.

According to the police report, the missing bikes include a custom “Stealth” Ride 2 Recovery bike, a Raleigh Talus black bike with blue accents, a Felt black carbon fiber bike and a Cannondale 29 white bike with black lettering.

Raleighs, Felts and Cannondales, those are great bikes. And not cheap.

400,000 Hiroshimas!

As a writer, I am constantly on guard against hyperbole and exaggeration. A little works, too much and you tend to annoy people. Take Albert Arnold “Al” Gore, Jr. for instance:

“The total amount of man-made global warming pollution surrounding the planet and the atmosphere today now traps enough extra energy every 24 hours to equal the energy release by 400,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs going off every single day,” Gore said.

C’mon Al! That seems like a bit much. Go with 350,000 Hiroshimas!

Thanks Raul and Fidel Villarreal!

Read this article on two scummy border agents. Observe their names. Then peek at the country they represent. Who names kids Raul and Fidel?

Two brothers who worked as Border Patrol agents were scheduled to be sentenced Friday for smuggling hundreds of immigrants into the United States in one of the highest-profile corruption cases to sting the federal agency in a decade.

Raul and Fidel Villarreal face a maximum of 50 years in prison and at least $1.25 million in penalties when they appear before U.S. District Court Judge John A. Houston in San Diego.

Go back to Cuba, or. . .

Mohammed Ahmed and His Poor Timing

I’ve known guys named Mohammed Mohammed, Ahmed Mohamed, and Mohamed Ahmed. Although this particular Mohammed Ahmed has terrible timing:

The honeymoon is over for Mohammed Ahmed.

The 21-year-old Illinois man was arrested for soliciting a prostitute last week while he was honeymooning with his new wife in Florida.

Ahmed was among 92 people nabbed in a prostitution sweep conducted by Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The alleged john answered an online ad, on website Backpage.com, which, to his horror, turned out to be planted by an undercover deputy as part of the four-day operation.

Compare/contrast Ahmed’s story with the sneaky, creepy Dr. Ross Finocchio, an NYU prof with a truly unfortunate name. (Hint: think Geppetto.)

David Sheff Is Wrong

David Sheff is a writer known for a book (about his son Nic and his drug problem) called Beautiful Boy. And his current book is called Clean. His thoughts on drug addiction:

using drugs is not about willpower or character. Most problematic drug use is related to stress, trauma, genetic predisposition, mild or serious mental illness, use at an early age, or some combination of those.

In college, I was around a couple o’folks with drug problems and I tend to lean towards this explanation by a Yahoo reader named Diogenes The Dawg:

Wrong. I have never heard of a single case where someone put a gun to someone else’s head and forced him/her to do drugs and subsequently become an addict. You are responsible for your actions. Quit coping out and pretending it’s beyond your own control.

I like self-control, character, and responsibility.

420 Event Leaves Tons of Trash

When I lived near People’s Park in Berkeley as a freshmen, I used to go out of my way to avoid the place. I was not scared for my personal safety, rather it stunk and was such an eyesore, it was depressing. Much like Golden Gate Park’s Hippie Hill after the 420 event this weekend. (And no, your eyes are not fooling you. That is a worker wearing a full Indian headdress as he rakes up the garbage. This is San Francisco!)

Bradford County Sexual Predator Signs

I am 90% in favor of what Bradford County, Florida is doing, placing signs at the homes of sexual predators. I believe in privacy, but the recidivism rate is very high:

Bradford County, Florida has placed signs at the homes of sexual predators, like Brian Speer

Bradford County, Florida & a sign at the home of sexual predator Brian Speer

Of course, it never allows the man or woman redemption if they have truly changed their life. Also, I’ve heard of folks charged under dubious conditions.

Soldier Bryan Henn, Phony Hometown Hero

Bryan Henn, Hometown Hero, Darryl Cornett, Darlene CornettSoldier Bryan Henn told his family that he was serving in Afghanistan and earned a Purple Heart and an Army Medal of Commendation with Valor. But it all turned out to be a lie and his family came clean on his Red Cross Hometown Hero status.

I do find some of the comments after the article to be particularly inappropriate, such as this:

We should reach out to this young man. Perhaps his military service has been traumatic and that is why he made the statements. Because he is a son of our community, we need to be concerned of his well being.

Truly, the phony’s parents, Darryl and Darlene Cornett, were very up front and honest.

Veniamin Konstantinovich Balika, One Cheesy Dude

Veniamin Konstantinovich Balika tries to steal Muenster Cheese in Cashton, Wisconsin

Veniamin Konstantinovich Balika and Muenster Cheese

What Veniamin Konstantinovich Balika tried to pull in Cashton, Wisconsin remains one of the chessiest crimes I’ve ever read of. He attempted to steal 42,000 pounds of Muenster cheese from a Wisconsin creamery:

Seems cheese crime is booming: Today we get news that an Illinois man is being charged with trying to steal 42,000 pounds of Muenster cheese from a Wisconsin creamery. Last yearwe had news of the “mozzarella mafia,” which was smuggling American cheese into Canada and selling it for a third of the price.

In the latest incident, WISC-TV reports that Veniamin Konstantinovich Balika, 34, allegedly drove his semi truck to K&K Cheese in Cashton, Wis. According to authorities, he provided fake documentation and the company loaded roughly $200,000 worth of cheese onto his truck.

Whoever wrote this article is clueless. The allusion to the mozzarella mafia is that they bought the cheese in America for 1/3 the price and sold it for the higher price in Canada. Read all about it here. . .
