Mamacharis: Often Imitated, Often Duplicated

In the Osaka Craigslist bike section, someone left this slightly misleading ad:
Mountain Bike – JPY4000 (Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City)

Blue mountain bike for sale in Kyoto City. We are leaving Japan on July 29th, 2013 and must sell the bike by then. Asking 4,000 yen.

Mountain Bike - JPY4000 (Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City)
Mountain Bike – JPY4000 (Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City)

And someone was not pleased with it:
You kidding, right? That thing is NOT mountain bike at all. The thing is MAMACHARI. Where did you get that idea?

… and asking for 4000 yen for THAT thing? Good luck.

Ah, the good ol’ Mamachari. Often imitated, often duplicated.

  1. Yeah but, look at that basket. You could get a lot of groceries in that or at least a six pack of beer. And look at those fenders! I had those on my first Sears bike back in the 60’s. And is that a bell or what near the brake handle? Cute!

  2. It looks like a ‘first’ bike for a kid….who would buy this was a ‘mountain’ bike?…and what’s 4000 yen anyway?? Looks like after conversion it’s $40 and some change…sorry it isn’t even worth that….k
