Just One Word, Cyber

Very very quietly, the Navy is getting on board with cyber, starting with the Academy, that denizen of higher learning. Three insiders quoted on the matter:

Having that kind of facility on campus will not only expand what mids can talk about in the classroom, but will also allow for more speakers to give lectures, said Capt. Paul Tortora, deputy director for the academy’s Center for Cyber Security Studies…

Cyber is becoming critical to the mission, so much so that Academic Dean Andrew Phillips puts it on par with the Navy’s four other fighting domains: land, sea, air and space…

Midshipman 3rd Class Molly McNamara, one of the first mids to declare a cyber major, signed up without knowing what to expect. “Because this is a new major, I’m really interested to see what we’ll do,” she said…

Dustin Hoffman (in the Graduate) was once told: I just want to say one word to you — just one word — ‘plastics.’ Let me rephrase that for today’s Navy: I just want to say one word to you — just one word – Cyber. . .

  1. Cyber attack/defence is as important as the rifle you carry in your hand. It is ‘the’ most important issue within every Western orientated military force. In my mind linguists would be the ideal backbone for the ‘Cyber Service’.

The common bond language within the UN as well as NATO is english, and the writing is on the wall for the prime enemy language for the long foreseeable future. It makes sense to ‘double hat’ cyber and languages.
It is also a good route to follow in civvie street, as most of the top companies within the major industries are wide open to cyber abuse, which generally starts from within.

    Yours Aye.

    • You are right that it often starts from within. In fact, I think a major case recently popped with that very same m.o. I think the perp is hiding in Hong Kong of all places…

      • It seems that particular individual has decided to move to a more ‘democratic’ country…let’s see….Russia, Cuba, Venezuela…?? Not exactly our idea of democratic but hey, the guy is searching…k

        • Russia has accepted the services of the ‘offender’, who should now be standing on the most corruptible ground this side of the black stump…

As I said before; he may well have had grounds to justify his action, but it should have been done through the correct channel.

I hope he likes caviar, vodka, and fast women! Because the money and lifestyle he will receive will keep him deep in it for the rest of his estranged life.

          Yours Aye.

          • I am just following the news right now. His flight landed and everything. Get yer popcorn! (Although, I consider this very serious now that he has tipped his hat as to intentions.)
