The USS Recruit was a battleship replica made out of wood, used as a recruiting tool for the U.S. Navy in 1917. And it sat in Union Square for more than 3 years:

Per the link, 25,000 New Yorkers signed with Team Navy due to it. Or so says the New York Times, back when they were more seaworthy on the ocean of public trust.
