Give Me Your Tired

Sailors, from the amphibious transport dock ship San Antonio, look at the Statue of Liberty before helping to get water out of the building from Hurricane Sandy.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

–Emma Lazarus, 1883

  1. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.” that greeted immigrants crossing the Atlantic from the 1890’s to the 1920’s and landed on Ellis Island was inspirational to those who braved change to venture to our shores.

Those immigrant were coming from Europe where their countries did not offer opportunities for a better life. The big difference from then and immigration now is that back then you did not have food stamps, EBT cards, Section 8 housing, Medicaid, free cell phones, etc. There was no free sh*t back then for immigrants. Back then we had open, but controlled, borders because we wanted people to come and succeed on their own to expand our great republic without any government assistance.

I am in full favor to letting any and all to come here provided that they get no free sh*t. When I married my wife who is from Switzerland and she got her “green” card she had to sign paperwork affirming that she, or her offspring, would not go on the public dole. I had to sign paperwork affirming that if she did, I was on the hook for payment and my tax refunds would be withheld. This was back in the 1990’s.

We need real immigration reform. I ain’t holding my breath though.

  2. And we have all those Muslim terrorists that seem to be crossing the Mexican border into the US with ever increasing numbers….never mind the illegal South American immigrants…I had heard there is reverse immigration going on now because of no available work…well, that should continue with another four years of Obama…aren’t we lucky…pretty soon we won’t be able to identify America because of all the foreigners in it…..k

  3. CP: That sadly is true.
Don: My ancestors emigrated here legally, the way you describe. And they passed the Statue of Liberty on their way in. It is tragic how we have fallen.
    Kris: Reverse immigration, good term.
