Depression in the Navy

I know the military, and the Navy in particular (especially the submariners), keep an eye on depression. It is a challenging issue. That said, your quiz of the day is:

The angle of depression of a Submarine from another Navy ship is 28 degrees….?

The angle of depression of a submarine from another Navy ship is 28 degrees. The submarine is 791 ft. from the ship. About how deep is the submarine?

F. 371ft
G. 421ft
H. 563ft
J. 698ft

I am depressed. This problem really got my Navy goat. I had no idea how to solve it. But reading the solution, I see it is quite easy. I’ve just never heard the term angle of depression.

  1. It’s just simple trigonometry You have a right angle triangle because depth is measured straight down therefore one angle is 90 deg and you are given one angle of 28 deg therefore the other angle is 62 deg and the length of the hypotenuse is 791. Therefore you only need to solve for the side of the triangle opposite the 28 deg angle.
    SIN(28 deg) = depth/791
    depth = .46947 x 791 = 371
    First time I’ve used trig since 1977!

  2. I saw the answer to this before….on the site…first one, in fact…I never took trig…I barely got through college Calculus….but there are those who love math somewhere out in our world and in the US…so hope springs eternal….k

  3. Timmeehh: Great, I’ve always loved trig. . .Glad to see yours is still good!
    Lou: Don’t say that or I will post more obligatory math problems!
    Kris: Ah, you’ve a good memory! I bet you use one of those memory foam mattresses.

  4. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…Navy One…you think you’re so funny? Pistols at dawn…..yuk, yuk…k
