A Photo That Strikes Terror into Sailor’s Hearts

Yes, Captain Ahab hunted whales a long time ago. And no, us Navy Sailors do not hunt whales. But if I was in one of these little boats where Bill Bouton took this picture in San Luis Obispo, I would be nerrrrr-voussssss:

Bill Bouton took this photo in San Luis Obispo of a humpback whale.

    • The girl on the board is in front of a second paddler on the kayak behind her. She’s wearing a shorty wetsuit, not a dress.

And the picture was taken with a long telephoto lens, which compresses perspective, making everything look closer than they are to each other.

      Looks like a fun day.

  1. I’ve never seen a shorty wetsuit with spaghetti straps and a hemline! Pretty classy – and somewhat ditzy. ;-)

    • That’s what makes me feel it’s a photoshop effort…it looks like a cartoon….sorry, the appearance of it doesn’t seem to reflect a real photograph….a telephoto lens makes it look like that? I find that virtually impossible to believe…

  2. San Luis Obispo is 13 miles inland from Morro Bay, the closest water that could be accessed by a whale. More info please on the origin of this picture. Perhaps it is Avila Beach on San Luis Obispo Bay near Pismo Beach.
