I take umbrage with this:

 Sheesh, lumping naval officers in with pirates.
Wait, pirates are cool these days, what with Pirates of the Caribbean.
Okay, I’m fine.

  2. I always thought they wore tr-corner hats so they could sleep without taking them off. Besides, I think they only wore them in port. At see they would be a pain in the ass with all the wind blowing. It’s hard to look majestic walking among the crew while holding one hand on your hat.
