Taylor Swift, Sweetheart

I’m awfully hard on celebrities. Click on the link labeled Celebrities to the left/below to see some of my prior hit-jobs. I don’t like folks in the public eye punking out to get attention. And I rarely find celebrities heroic or acting in other than their own interests. Perhaps, just perhaps, Taylor Swift breaks this mold:

A South New Jersey teen battling Leukemia was hoping to make a dream come true by taking country music star Taylor Swift as his date to his June prom. Unfortunately, the pop singer won’t be able to make it, so she’s invited him to be her date to the Academy of Country Music awards show instead.

Taylor Swift Invites Kevin McGuire to American Country Music Awards

It all started when Kevin McGuire, a senior at Sterling High School in Somerdale, N.J., asked the mega superstar through his Facebook campaign to his prom on June 1, which happens to be the same day as his birthday. Tens of thousands of people have subscribed to his page offering support.

His sister, Victoria, who set up the page, hoped that Swift would see it and accept the invitation.

Yes, I know inviting a Leukemia patient to an award show is no-brainer in terms of good publicity. But everything I’ve seen of her has spoken to her character. I don’t know her music, but Taylor Swift is the kind of role model this country needs. . .

  1. She does seem like a good person. But, asking celebrities to such things is like holding someone emotional hostage – kind of like a chain letter – damned if you do; damned if you don’t.

  2. Funny thing…I know more about Taylor’s charitable giving than I do her music.
And of course there was that Kanye West thing. Taylor seems like a good kid.

I’m always a little leary of celebrities and their charity work.
Would they give the same amount of money or time if they didn’t receive any good publicity in return?
