Is it okay for a Muslim to join the United States Navy?

That is the question being asked on Yahoo Answers:

I’m 15 and I already know Im not going to sit in a hospital or office all day for the rest of my life. I’m the kind of person that likes to be active. I play football in highschool. So , I already also know that my future is in the military. I am an American born citizen with Arab descent. I already know the process to join the navy, but I realized that with all the attention in the middle east, Im just gonna end up killing my own race. I want to join the air force or the SEALs. Would I be seen as a traitor by Muslims and hated? Would I go to hell? I think it is acceptable if it is war, and god said to support your own nation, but I am just confused. Can a wise Muslim Tell me if it is okay?

  1. You’re dipping your toes into the arena of political correctness and multicultural diversity, Navy One? Think Major Hasan…k

    • I made no comment, either pro or con, in relation to him trying to join. I only posted it as I thought it interesting. . .

  2. It would seem that the young man needs to decide what he thinks is most important – his race, his religion, or his freedom.

  3. I hear all the pros and cons about fighting Muslims. But I think it is more that we are fighting Terrorism and any Muslim who uses the Koran as an excuse to kill. We are not a war with a religion, but a sect of that religion. And the first comment dude made me wonder…if anyone who kills a Muslim will go to hell, I guess all the Muslims who plant the IED’s and set off bombs killing their own people are headed for Hell. Kinda counterproductive don’t ya think?

  4. You also have to factor in if the military will trust you being Muslim. I personally wouldn’t and I have been in for 21 years. You already have mixed feelings, your instincts need to be sharp to do what we do. No back and forth – can you live with that?
