A Tale of Two Girls – UPDATED

Two girls, nearly the same age, in neighboring countries, recently underwent health challenges. Both are brave and deserve tremendous praise for their actions and accomplishments. Sadly, each are in a bad way.

Afghanistan brings us Sahar Gul:

Sahar Gul

A 15-year-old Afghan girl was brutally tortured, beaten and locked in a toilet by her husband’s family for months after she refused to become a prostitute, officials said Saturday.

Sahar Gul was in critical condition when she was rescued from a house in northern Baghlan province last week, after her neighbors reported hearing Gul crying and moaning in pain.

According to police in Baghlan, her in-laws pulled out her nails and hair, and locked her in a dark basement bathroom for about five months, with barely enough food and water to survive.

And Pakistan brings us Arfa Karim Randhawa:

Arfa Karim Randhawa

A 16 year-old girl who was once deemed one of the youngest Microsoft Professionals in the world, is in critical condition after suffering cardiac arrest on Dec. 22.

Arfa Karim Randhawa, who received that recognition at age 9 after meeting Bill Gates, is currently on life support in a hospital in Pakistan. Doctors there say there’s no hope for her survival, according to a report in The Express Tribune.

Arfa’s father, Lt Col (Retd) Amjad Karim Randhawa told the publication that that the cardiac arrest was caused by an epileptic attack, which also damaged her brain. “Only a miracle will allow my brilliant, genius daughter to live now,” he told the paper.

Truly sad stories, both of them. May Arfa wake up and be healthy and may Sahar get away from her “family” and find refuge with those who would protect and honor her. And may someone go Samuel L. Jacksonish on the animals who tortured her. That is all.

Update: To all the Ladies and Gentlemen from Pakistan who came to this blog searching for Arfa Karim Randhawa’s family, address, phone number, cousin, school, etc, please buzz off. I don’t possess the details you seek. And I can’t imagine your intentions are benign. If they were, would you not already know this information? I’m at 40 hits from Pakistan today and counting. Don’t you all have a protest to go to?

  1. What’s sadder is the fucked up family will probable not be punished by being locked up for eternity. And what about HER family? Once she is married do they just wash their hands of her ever being in their life? Can they not retaliate? And Liberals want us to honor the loving Islam beliefs. NOT ME!
